Plaque biofilm is a layer of bacteria that sticks to teeth, gums and other surfaces of the mouth. Plaque biofilm forms naturally as soon as 1 hour after oral care.  Plaque buildup is the main cause of gum disease. Plaque that remains on the teeth will bind with minerals and bacteria toxins to harden and form calculus, or tartar.

Although bacterial plaque biofilm is believed to be the primary cause in inflammatory periodontal diseases, it is also recognized that the pet’s immune systems response determines the rate of progression of the disease

Gingivitis: inflammation of the gums is the first indication that gum disease is beginning. At early stages it is reversable with routine dental hygiene. Gingivitis usually presents as red, swollen gums and bleeds when brushing.  Gingivitis is reversible with proper home care and regular professional cleanings.  If left untreated, gingivitis will lead to more serious levels of periodontal disease, resulting in tooth loss or worse organ failure

Dental calculus, commonly referred to as tartar, is oral biofilm that has been mineralized by calcium and phosphate salts from saliva. Although calculus is not the causative factor in periodontal infection, it permits the attachment and retention of plaque biofilm.

These 4 photos show different degrees of the same level of progression and would be classed as Level 1-2 on the periodontal disease scale.  At this level it is considered reversable. We can return the mouth to healthy state with a routine non surgical dental protocol.  The surfaces of the teeth have a moderate to heavy amount of Dental Calculus, Plaque and Gingivitis. But, notice the gum line still carries a uniformity of health.

This mouth is severely diseased.  We can see that the gumlines  Protective Seal has failed. The  gumline is angry and has moderate to severe recession over most of the visible teeth.

Oral surgery is the protocol for this level of progression.  Dental radiographs to determine at what level of bone loss has occurred and to determine the number of teeth that need to be removed to return the mouth to a healthy stage.
